Massachusetts closes 35 beaches due to bacteria and algae

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has closed 35 beaches and ponds across the state due to water quality concerns. The closures, which affect areas ranging from Amherst to Brewster, were reported as a warm weekend approached.

According to state health officials, 24 locations were shut down due to bacteria levels, seven due to harmful algae, and four for other unspecified reasons. Notable affected areas include Tashmoo Beach in Tisbury and several Kings Beach access points in Lynn.

Health officials warn that entering closed waters increases the risk of illness. Water quality issues can be triggered by stormwater runoff, animal waste, or leaking sewer lines. The state maintains an interactive dashboard to provide hourly updates on beach safety, noting that bacteria-related closures remain in effect until follow-up testing confirms the water meets safety standards.
