Massachusetts court blocks religious statues in Quincy municipal building

A legal dispute has emerged in Quincy, Massachusetts, regarding the installation of religious statues at a new municipal headquarters for police and fire services. The city planned to install statues of Saint Michael, the patron saint of police, and Saint Florian, the patron saint of firefighters.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has blocked the installation of these figures, citing state constitutional requirements for government neutrality in religious matters. Following the ruling, the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts and Americans United for Separation of Church and State characterized the decision as a victory for religious freedom and the separation of church and state.

City officials have argued that the statues serve a secular purpose, intended to honor first responders who risk their lives for the community. They noted that figures like Archangel Michael and Saint Florian are venerated by more than just the Catholic community. However, the court has ordered the matter to be reconsidered.
