Massachusetts court clears path for $325M White Stadium renovation

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court has ruled in favor of Boston Mayor Michelle Wu’s proposal to redevelop White Stadium in Franklin Park. The $325 million project aims to transform the 77-year-old facility into a modern stadium designed to serve Boston Public Schools athletics and act as the home venue for Boston Legacy FC, the city’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) expansion team.

The ruling dismisses a lawsuit brought by local residents and the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, who argued the project violated the terms of the George Robert White Fund by allowing private, for-profit use of protected public parkland. The court unanimously decided that the plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to block the project, noting that only the Attorney General or a trustee of the fund could sue to defend its terms.

While the decision removes a major legal hurdle for the renovation, the timeline for completion remains uncertain. The project is a central component of the city’s successful bid to bring an NWSL team to Boston for the 2026 season, with proponents emphasizing that the facility will be used by student-athletes for more than 300 days a year.
