Massachusetts Fire Services Adds Mobile SCBA Maze to Boost Firefighter Survival

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services (DFS) announced an expansion of firefighter survival training at the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy (MFA) with a new mobile self‑contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) training maze. The portable maze will allow realistic, hands‑on SCBA instruction to reach recruit and veteran municipal firefighters across the Commonwealth, both on the academy campus and directly at local fire departments. It replaces the academy’s original Stow‑based maze and supports DFS’s 30‑year legacy of preparing thousands of firefighters.

Public Safety and Security Secretary Gina Kwon said the addition reflects DFS’s commitment to “investing in modern equipment and training environments that reflect the dangerous and unpredictable conditions firefighters face.” State Fire Marshal Jon M. Davine noted the maze is “one of our most frequently requested training tools” and will help deliver critical survival training to more communities, strengthening preparedness and safety.
