Massachusetts fishermen catch 571 kg Atlantic blue marlin

A massive Atlantic blue marlin weighing approximately 571.5 kg (1,260 pounds) and measuring over 3.35 meters in length was caught off the coast of Massachusetts on August 19. The catch, which is only about 64.4 kg shy of a world record, was secured after a three-hour struggle by charter boat captain Damon Sacco and his client, Walter Chapman.

The fish was caught near the Atlantis Canyon, an underwater canyon located about 100 miles from Cape Cod. Captain Sacco reported that upon initially seeing the fin, he mistook the creature for a giant shark. The intense struggle resulted in the marlin's sharp bill puncturing holes in the side of the charter boat, Castafari.

The marlin's body was processed for food, while its head was sent to a laboratory for age determination.
