Massachusetts Governor demands ICE answers over rapid immigration arrests

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has demanded answers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following a series of rapid arrests in New Bedford. The Governor reported receiving “alarming” complaints regarding operations that targeted individuals, including employees from a fishing plant and a supermarket, some of whom had lived in the state for years.

Healey highlighted the human impact of these enforcement actions, noting cases where children were left without parents, including an 8-year-old waiting at school and an infant whose father was detained. The Governor stated that the federal agency must provide immediate information regarding who is being arrested and why.

In a separate incident in Marlborough, ICE Boston reported the arrest of Máximo García-López, an undocumented migrant from Guatemala. The arrest followed a tractor-trailer accident involving an illegal turn that resulted in a child being hospitalized. Investigations revealed that García-López was operating the vehicle without a commercial driver's license and had multiple other driving infractions.
