Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey calls on Congress to extend Haitian TPS

Governor Maura Healey urged the U.S. Senate to pass legislation extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitians, after the House of Representatives approved the measure. TPS for Haitians, in place since 2010, was slated to expire following a Supreme Court decision upholding the Trump administration’s plan to end the program. Healey warned that ending TPS would affect more than 45,000 Haitian workers in Massachusetts, who are employed in health care, long‑term care, transportation, hospitality and construction. The Massachusetts Senior Care Association estimated that up to 2,000 senior‑care workers could lose authorization, threatening the state’s already strained health‑care workforce. Congressional leaders, including Democratic Whip Katherine Clark, echoed the call, describing Haitian TPS holders as essential contributors to the state’s economy and community life.
