Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey defends state gun control laws

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey joined supporters at the Boston Teachers Union hall to advocate for existing gun control legislation. During a ‘Yes on 9’ rally, Healey stated that current laws are effective in protecting communities and enhancing public safety.

AFT president Jessica Tang supported this stance, noting that the state maintains one of the lowest gun death rates in the country. Tang cited data indicating decreases in gun violence in Springfield, Chelsea, and Lynn following recent legislative measures.

However, critics point to recent incidents to question the efficacy of these laws. In a recent Boston case, police arrested two individuals following a shooting, discovering a firearm with an obliterated serial number. The suspects, a 20-year-old and a 17-year-old, faced various charges, including possession of a large capacity firearm and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building.
