Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey launches MBTA fare pilot programs

Governor Maura Healey announced three new Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) pilot programs aimed at making public transit more affordable and flexible. Beginning Sept. 1, the pilots will run for six months and include an expanded two‑hour “unlimited” transfer window that lets riders make unlimited transfers on subway, bus or ferry trips while paying only the highest fare incurred. A second pilot eliminates premium express‑bus rates, saving commuters up to $500 over the period, and a third offers free fares to residents aged 75 and older who no longer drive. The governor also extended existing commuter‑rail discount programs through November.

She said, “Every day, we’re looking for new ways to lower costs and make it easier for people to choose public transportation.” Lieutenant Governor Kim Driscoll added the measures are intended to put money back in riders’ pockets and increase ridership.
