Massachusetts Governor signs law removing abortion gestational limits
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has signed the ‘Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act’, a law that removes previous gestational limits on abortion in the state. Previously, abortions after 24 weeks were permitted only under specific circumstances, such as to preserve the life or health of the patient or in cases of severe fetal abnormalities.
The new legislation replaces those specific requirements with a standard allowing physicians to perform abortions based on their professional medical judgment. The law also eliminates certain reporting and facility requirements, such as the mandate that late-term abortions be performed in a hospital setting, allowing them to occur in other licensed healthcare centers.
