Massachusetts Governor Healey signs law removing abortion gestational limits
Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has signed the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act, a law that removes previous gestational limits on abortion in the state. Under the new legislation, physicians can perform abortions based on their professional medical judgment without the previous requirement to prove a threat to the mother's life, physical or mental health, or a fatal fetal diagnosis.
With this change, Massachusetts becomes the 10th U.S. state to permit abortion throughout the entire duration of pregnancy. Governor Healey defended the measure, stating that healthcare decisions should be made between patients, families, and their doctors rather than politicians, and pledged to keep abortion safe, legal, and accessible.
The law has drawn significant criticism from religious and pro-life groups. CatholicVote has called upon Massachusetts Catholic bishops to consider the excommunication of Governor Healey, citing canon law regarding complicity in abortion. Additionally, religious leaders such as Franklin Graham have condemned the legislation, describing the signing ceremony and the law itself as immoral.
