Massachusetts Governor signs law removing abortion gestational limits

Governor Maura Healey has signed the ‘Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act’ into law in Massachusetts, removing previous restrictions on abortions performed after 24 weeks of pregnancy. The new legislation permits the procedure throughout all stages of pregnancy, potentially up to the moment of birth, based on a physician’s professional judgment.

The law has drawn significant criticism from various groups and even some members of the Democratic Party. Nine Democratic state representatives voted against the bill, with some describing the new regulations as ‘barbaric’ and an ‘extremist and dangerous position.’

Critics argue the law creates ethical dilemmas for medical professionals and conflicts with existing criminal case law. Opponents also expressed concern that the legislation does not align with the beliefs of the majority of constituents and may lead to the use of public funds for these procedures.
