Massachusetts heritage railroads offer scenic excursions

Massachusetts offers various heritage rail experiences that highlight the state's scenic landscapes and history. In the western part of the state, the Berkshire Scenic Railway operates out of Lenox. This nonprofit-run service utilizes restored vintage coaches to take passengers through wooded countryside and open views, with seasonal changes offering different scenery such as autumn foliage.

On Cape Cod, the Cape Cod Central Railroad (CCCR) provides nostalgic rail journeys through coastal environments, including beaches, villages, and salt marshes. The CCCR offers specialized services such as evening dinner trains between Hyannis and Sagamore, as well as brunch and luncheon options. While regular year-round passenger service to the Cape declined in the late 1950s, the railroad has maintained a presence through recreational and specialty excursions.
