Massachusetts launches public database for hot work violations

The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services has launched a new public-facing database to track violations of the State Fire Code and Massachusetts General Laws regarding hot work processes, such as welding and grinding.

The initiative follows the signing of Chapter 114 of the Acts of 2026 by Governor Maura Healey. This legislation was prompted by a 2014 fire that resulted in the deaths of Boston Fire Lieutenant Edward J. Walsh and Firefighter Michael Kennedy after unpermitted hot work ignited a nearby structure.

Under the new law, the Department of Fire Services will collect violation data from local departments, notify property owners and insurance providers, and maintain a searchable public record of these enforcement actions.
