Massachusetts expands abortion access by removing 24-week limit
Governor Maura Healey has signed the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act into law in Massachusetts, significantly expanding abortion access by removing the previous 24-week gestational limit. Under the new legislation, the decision to perform an abortion at any stage of pregnancy is left to the professional judgment of a physician, rather than being restricted to specific medical circumstances such as preserving the mother's life or addressing lethal fetal anomalies.
The law has drawn intense criticism from religious and pro-life organizations. Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, described the measure as an “affront against the dignity of life.” Similarly, the National Right to Life Committee argued the law weakens protections for unborn fetuses.
Notably, the legislation has also faced opposition from within the state's own Democratic Party. Several Democratic state representatives broke ranks to vote against the bill, labeling the new law “barbaric” and “extremist.” Massachusetts joins a small group of U.S. states and the District of Columbia that permit abortion access without specific gestational age limits.
