Massachusetts report details decades of abuse by 270 Catholic clerics

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell has released an investigative report detailing decades of sexual abuse by more than 270 Catholic clerics, affecting nearly 1,000 children across the Fall River, Springfield, and Worcester dioceses.

The investigation, which spanned eight years and involved reviewing over 300,000 pages of documents and interviewing more than 100 individuals, found that diocesan leaders often prioritized protecting the reputation of the Church over child safety. Institutional failures included transferring accused priests to different parishes without disclosure, failing to report allegations to law enforcement, and providing insufficient supervision for clergy returning to ministry after treatment.

While the majority of the abuse occurred before 2002, the report highlights a systemic pattern of misconduct. Although the investigation did not lead to widespread new indictments due to expired statutes of limitations or conduct that was not illegal at the time, three cases were referred to local district attorneys, one of which resulted in criminal charges in Worcester. The Diocese of Worcester stated it would study the report to improve victim response and child protection efforts.
