Massachusetts voters to decide on primary reform in November election

Massachusetts voters will decide on several key items during the state election on November 3, 2026. A central focus is Ballot Question 3, a proposed measure that would fundamentally change the state's electoral system by eliminating traditional political primaries.

Under the proposed law, all eligible candidates for offices such as governor would appear on a single primary ballot available to all registered voters, regardless of party affiliation. The two candidates receiving the most votes in the September primary would advance to the November general election. Proponents suggest this change would empower the state's 3.2 million registered independent voters, who currently constitute the largest voting bloc in Massachusetts.

The election will also include races for Governor, U.S. Senator, Lieutenant Governor, Attorney General, and various other state and local offices. Voters are encouraged to utilize early voting or mail-in ballots to manage polling lines, with registration deadlines set for October 24.
