Massimo Agosti emphasizes importance of infant nutrition
Massimo Agosti, President of the Italian Society of Neonatology (SIN) and professor at the University of Insubria, has emphasized the critical importance of nutrition during the first thousand days of life for long-term adult health.
Speaking at the Programma Academy event, Agosti identified breastfeeding as the primary standard for infant nutrition. He noted that when breast milk is unavailable, infant formulas should aim to be as functionally similar to breast milk as possible.
Recent advancements in nutritional science focus on formulas that mimic the functional benefits of breast milk rather than just its complex composition. These improvements aim to provide short-term protection against infections and long-term benefits by helping to prevent conditions such as obesity, overweight, and ischemic heart disease.
