Italy's progressive alliance debates program and leadership

Leaders of Italy's progressive coalition, known as 'campo largo', are negotiating a unified political program and leadership structure. Giuseppe Conte, president of the Five Star Movement, proposed forming a coalition named 'Alleanza per la Costituzione' and suggested that a common program could be finalized within weeks. Elly Schlein, secretary of the Democratic Party, expressed openness to holding primaries to maintain alliance unity, noting that the coalition already shares many common goals, such as the minimum wage.

Internal tensions persist regarding the inclusion of Matteo Renzi and his Italia Viva party. Chiara Appendino of the Five Star Movement argued that Renzi's presence acts as a subtractive factor that alienates progressive voters, citing his past political decisions. Renzi responded by criticizing Appendino's judicial history. Additionally, Nicola Fratoianni of Sinistra Italia addressed international policy, clarifying that while the alliance opposes Russia's aggression in Ukraine, they seek a diplomatic path to end the conflict rather than relying solely on military escalation.

Polling data from Piave indicates a potential advantage for the progressive alliance under the new 'Stabilicum' electoral law, though a head-to-head primary between Giuseppe Conte and Elly Schlein shows Conte leading with 42% to 38%.
