Massimo D'Alema calls for center-left unity and warns of global instability
Massimo D'Alema, former Italian Prime Minister and head of the Fondazione Italianieuropei, has expressed skepticism regarding the use of political primaries within the center-left. Speaking at the Fiera del Levante in Bari, D'Alema argued that primaries tend to emphasize divisions and distinctions rather than common ground, potentially weakening the opposition's ability to present a credible alternative to the current center-right government.
He emphasized the need for programmatic unity and a shared political synthesis to prepare for future elections. On the international stage, D'Alema addressed the current state of global instability, describing a period of "confused and conflictual multipolarism." He noted that disorder is being driven by major powers, specifically citing Russia's aggressive nationalism in Ukraine and criticizing the current leadership of the United States for a perceived loss of international credibility. He also advocated for the European Union to increase its diplomatic weight to mediate global crises and move them away from military conflict.
