Massimo Garavaglia challenges Matteo Salvini for Lega leadership

Senator Massimo Garavaglia has announced he is considering a candidacy for the leadership of the Lega party at its extraordinary congress, scheduled for October 24 and 25 in Milan. Garavaglia, a former Minister of Tourism and current president of the Finance Commission, indicated that his potential run would necessitate a secret ballot, challenging the prospect of a unanimous acclamation for current leader Matteo Salvini.

Garavaglia is viewed as a representative of the party’s northern and government-aligned wing, with ties to Giancarlo Giorgetti and Attilio Fontana. Matteo Salvini has responded to the news by stating that more candidates bringing ideas and proposals to the congress is a positive development, adding that he remains confident in his own ideas and trusts the party militants to decide the leadership.
