Massive 510kg star sapphire cluster discovered in Sri Lanka

A routine well-digging operation in the Ratnapura region of Sri Lanka has led to the discovery of a massive star sapphire cluster. The find, weighing approximately 510 kilograms (roughly 2.5 million carats), was located in the backyard of a home belonging to a jewelry trader identified as Mr. Gamage.

Named the ‘Serendipity Sapphire’, the formation is considered one of the largest star sapphire clusters in the world. Initial cleaning processes, which took over a year, revealed high-quality, pale blue star sapphires within the mass.

While the cluster has attracted interest from museums and private collectors, its exact market value remains unconfirmed. Some estimates suggest the find could be worth up to $100 million on the international market, pending formal valuation by independent global experts.
