Massive Attack banned from Singapore after Palestinian flag display
British trip‑hop duo Massive Attack performed at Singapore’s Star Theatre on 29 July. During the show a Palestinian flag was unfurled and sections of the audience chanted “Free Palestine”. Singapore police detained the two core members, Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, isolated them, questioned them separately, searched their hotel rooms and temporarily confiscated their passports. The authorities issued stern warnings and placed the musicians on a blacklist, barring them from re‑entering Singapore under the Foreign National Emblems (Control of Display) Act and the Public Order Act. The band said they were “surprised and disappointed” and added, “We did not imagine that merely holding up the flag of a sovereign state recognised by 157 countries would violate any law.” They expressed pride in the “impromptu expression” of solidarity with the Palestinian people. Singapore officials said the act could harm racial and religious harmony and urged foreigners not to import foreign politics into the city‑state.
