Liverpool police arrest dozens at Palestine Action protest

Police in Liverpool arrested dozens of protesters during a demonstration held on the sidelines of the Labour Party conference. The protest, organized by Defend Our Juries, was held in support of Palestine Action, a group that was designated as a terrorist organization in the United Kingdom in July 2025.

More than 250 demonstrators gathered to hold a silent vigil, many displaying signs that read ‘I support Palestine Action’. Merseyside Police stated that individuals were detained under the Terrorism Act for allegedly displaying materials in support of a proscribed organization. Among those arrested was 94-year-old human rights barrister Margaret Owen, as well as Robert Del Naja, a member of the musical group Massive Attack.

Amnesty International UK criticized the arrests, describing them as a ‘shameful attack on freedom of speech’. Organizers of the protest called on Prime Minister Andy Burnham to lift the ban on Palestine Action, arguing that maintaining the proscription is ‘unlogical, unhaltbar und unmoralisch’ and a waste of resources.
