Massive fish die-offs reported in Belgrade and near the Danube
Massive fish die-offs have been reported in several water bodies across the region, raising concerns about environmental management and water quality.
In Belgrade, approximately 35,000 carp died in the Veliko blato protected habitat. Reports suggest the loss occurred because municipal services failed to provide sufficient water levels. This incident has drawn political criticism regarding the handling of environmental issues.
Simultaneously, near Ilok on the Danube, local fishermen reported hundreds of dead fish, including carp, pike, catfish, and various white fish species. Water management inspectors confirmed the die-off near a wastewater treatment plant discharge point. While investigators noted that record low water levels, high temperatures, and drought have reduced oxygen levels in the water, they are maintaining increased surveillance for potential pollution or sudden contamination.
