Mastercard and Moovn partner to expand digital payments in East Africa

Mastercard and Moovn Technologies have entered into a five-year strategic partnership to expand digital payment infrastructure across East Africa, specifically targeting Kenya and Tanzania. The agreement aims to integrate Mastercard’s global network with MoovnPay’s digital wallet ecosystem to support mobility, logistics, and e-commerce platforms.

Under the deal, MoovnPay users will gain access to both virtual and physical prepaid Mastercard cards. The collaboration will also implement Mastercard Payment Gateway Services (MPGS) to facilitate online and in-app payments for merchants, alongside tokenization technology to enhance transaction security. For cross-border transactions, the companies plan to utilize the Mastercard Move platform.

The initiative seeks to provide drivers, riders, and small businesses with more efficient ways to manage peer-to-peer transfers and everyday commerce. This expansion follows MoovnPay’s selection for the Mastercard Start Path Emerging Fintech programme in late 2025.
