Mastercard launches early access for AI agent payments

Mastercard has opened early access to its ‘Agent Pay for Machines’ project, a system designed to allow AI agents to conduct autonomous transactions. The initiative aims to solve the friction caused by traditional payment methods, such as requiring manual account setups or API keys, which are difficult for autonomous agents to manage when selecting providers spontaneously.

During a demonstration at the Cloudflare Connect conference, an AI agent from the marketing agency Hype successfully executed nine payments to two different merchants to facilitate a campaign. The agent purchased social media research and campaign images while remaining within a single, human-approved budget.

The system utilizes the x402 open protocol, which leverages the ‘402 Payment Required’ HTTP status code. When an agent encounters a paid service, it generates a digitally signed payment voucher within its predefined limits. The provider verifies the voucher before delivering the service.

The infrastructure involves several partners: Coinbase provides the wallet infrastructure, the Ethereum-based Base network handles blockchain settlement, and BVNK manages fiat or stablecoin settlement via Mastercard’s Global Money Platform. While developers can now access APIs and a sandbox environment through early access, the project remains in the pilot phase and is not yet commercially available.
