Mastercard targets Brazil B2B market with new wholesale payment solution

Mastercard is expanding its focus toward the B2B payment sector in Brazil, targeting a market currently dominated by manual processes, bank slips (boletos), and duplicate invoices. While consumer electronic payments in Brazil have exceeded 90%, the company sees significant growth potential in corporate transactions, where approximately R$ 2.5 trillion still circulates via bank slips.

As part of this strategy, the company introduced the Mastercard Wholesale Program (MWP) at Febraban Tech 2026. Designed initially for the travel sector, the MWP uses virtual credit cards (VCNs) to connect travel agencies, hotels, and airlines. The solution aims to automate payments, provide transaction traceability, and manage currency exchange across more than 30 currencies. Currently, the platform is offered through Citibank.

This move is part of a broader restructuring of Mastercard’s B2B vertical. Other recent initiatives include Mastercard Move for cross-border payments and Small Business Credit Analytics for SME credit assessment. To ensure seamless integration, Mastercard is partnering with ERP systems such as Oracle and SAP for large corporations, and Omie for small and medium-sized enterprises.
