Masters of the Universe film faces box‑office shortfall, sequel prospects dim
The live‑action Masters of the Universe opened to a $54 million worldwide debut and has collected about $84 million to date, far below its $200 million production budget. The film slipped to fifth place at the box office after a steep revenue drop.
Amazon MGM Studios domestic distribution chief Kevin Wilson said, “This weekend represents a very solid start for ‘Masters of the Universe’ and the passionate, multigenerational audience response we’re seeing around the world has been fantastic.” Despite a 68% critic score and an 87% audience rating, the weak earnings cast doubt on the financial justification for a sequel, especially with upcoming blockbusters such as Toy Story 5 entering the market.
