Masters of the Universe film suffers 70% box-office decline amid new Barbie Teela doll launch
The live-action "Masters of the Universe" opened in U.S. theaters on June 5, backed by an estimated $200 million production budget. In its second weekend the movie posted a 70% drop in ticket sales, pulling in $8.6 million from 3,677 locations and bringing its domestic total to $45.7 million and $84 million worldwide, prompting analysts to label it one of the year’s biggest box‑office failures.
At the same time, Mattel released a Barbie Signature Teela doll tied to the film. The 11.5‑inch figure, designed with a likeness of Camila Mendes, features fabric armor pieces, a fabric torso, and a 5‑inch plastic sword, and is part of the movie’s merchandise lineup.
Both the poor financial performance and the new doll illustrate the challenges and ancillary efforts surrounding the franchise’s cinematic revival.
