Masters of the Universe reboot flops at the box office but tops streaming charts

The 2025 reboot of *Masters of the Universe* has failed to recoup its $170 million budget, earning roughly $29.5 million internationally and being labelled one of the year’s biggest cinema disappointments. Despite the poor theatrical performance, the film is performing strongly on streaming platforms, appearing in the top ten of JustWatch’s most‑watched titles and being available on Amazon Prime.

Critics have given the reboot a 67 % positive rating and audiences an 88 % approval score, a sharp contrast to the original 1987 film, which was only 20 % positively reviewed by the press and 41 % liked by viewers. New behind‑the‑scenes images reveal that Jared Leto, who portrays the villain Skeletor, was present on set in a custom muscle suit; the character’s face was created with CGI and enhanced with fake blood for realism.

The original 1987 movie, made on a $22 million budget, grossed $17.4 million in the United States and is now available for free streaming to Prime members, likely driving additional interest in the reboot.
