Mastodon releases Marrow Deep, first album since death of Brent Hinds

The heavy metal band Mastodon has released Marrow Deep, their ninth studio album. This marks a significant turning point for the group, as it is their first release following the death of longtime guitarist and vocalist Brent Hinds, who died in a motorcycle accident in August 2025.

The album also introduces new permanent members, guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira, expanding the band to a five-piece lineup. Musically, the record incorporates more prominent keyboard arrangements and explores themes of grief, loss, and perseverance.

Drummer and vocalist Brann Dailor explained that the title, Marrow Deep, refers to the profound level of connection found in intense personal relationships and the shared experience of creating emotional art. The album's themes are shaped by the loss of Hinds as well as the passing of Dailor’s mother, Michele J. Lawrence.
