Mastodon releases Marrow Deep, first album since death of Brent Hinds

The heavy metal band Mastodon has released Marrow Deep, their ninth studio album and their first since the departure and subsequent death of founding guitarist Brent Hinds in a motorcycle accident. The record serves as a profound exploration of grief, resilience, and transformation following a period of significant personal loss for the band members, including the death of drummer Brann Dailor’s mother.

Musically, the album introduces a new lineup featuring guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira. The sound incorporates elements of progressive rock and psychedelia, moving between aggressive riffs and more melodic, atmospheric textures. The album features several high-profile guest appearances, including Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age, Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath, and Randy Blythe of Lamb of God.

In a statement accompanying the release, the band described the creation process as a “turbulent ride” forged in “chaos and raw, unfiltered emotion,” noting that the experience “hit differently” than previous works. The album is released via Loma Vista Recordings.
