Mata Amritanandamayi: The life and humanitarian work of ‘Amma’

Mata Amritanandamayi, a spiritual leader and humanitarian known globally as ‘Amma’ or the ‘Hugging Saint’, was born on September 27, 1953, in Alappuzha, Kerala. Born into a fisherman family as Sudhamani Idamannel, her life has been defined by service and sacrifice.

At the age of nine, she left school to assist her family with household chores and care for her seven siblings following her mother's illness. Her early experiences with poverty and suffering in her community led her to provide food and clothing to those in need, often despite opposition from her family.

Through her compassionate approach, she earned the name ‘Amma’ (Mother). She has remained unmarried despite parental efforts to arrange marriages. Her organization, the Mata Amritanandamayi Math, currently operates worldwide, providing essential services in education, healthcare, and disaster relief.
