Mata do Bussaco recognized as first therapeutic forest in Iberian Peninsula

Mata do Bussaco, located in the municipality of Mealhada, Portugal, has become the first recognized ‘therapeutic forest’ in the Iberian Peninsula. The certification was awarded in July by the International Certification Office for Therapeutic Forests, which is affiliated with the International Society of Forest Therapy (ISFT).

Spanning over 100 hectares, the forest features high biodiversity, including approximately 250 species of trees and shrubs—such as sequoias, pines, oaks, and eucalyptus—and over 150 species of vertebrates. The certification follows a rigorous scientific audit that evaluated air quality, botanical density, acoustics, and accessibility for health practices.

Gonçalo Breda Marques, president of the Mata do Bussaco Foundation, stated that studies indicate the area provides significant benefits for stress reduction and relaxation. To facilitate these therapeutic experiences, the Foundation has established a guided two-kilometer trail for visitors.
