Mata Ortiz ceramic sphere exhibited at Palacio de Gobierno

A giant ceramic sphere titled ‘Antigua tradición: Guacamayas al Sol’ is being exhibited at the Palacio de Gobierno. Created in 2025 by ceramicist Jesús Octavio ‘Tavo’ Silveira Sandoval, the piece measures two meters in diameter and weighs 80 kilograms.

The sculpture is part of a series of monumental Mata Ortiz spheres designed to showcase the cultural heritage of Chihuahua. Made from fiberglass and orthophthalic polyester resin, the work evokes ancient designs from the Paquimé archaeological site and the Casas Grandes culture.

These monumental spheres have previously been featured in international and regional exhibitions, including Mexico Week in Chicago, Design Week Mexico 2025 in Chapultepec Forest, and at the Mexican Consulate in El Paso.
