Mataelpino hosts traditional giant ball run this weekend

The town of Mataelpino, located in the municipality of El Boalo near the Sierra de Guadarrama, is hosting its traditional ‘Boloencierro’ festival this weekend. This unique event replaces traditional bull running with a chase involving a giant ball.

To improve safety following previous incidents that resulted in serious injuries and hospitalizations, organizers have replaced the previous 300-kilogram polystyrene ball with a lighter rubber version. Despite being lighter, officials note the ball remains “demasiado peligrosa” (too dangerous) due to the steep streets of the town, and the use of protective helmets remains mandatory.

The adult event is scheduled for Saturday at midday, while children's versions, which utilize smaller and more manageable balls, will take place on Saturday and Sunday at 11:00 AM.
