Matamoros family names newborn ‘Isisi’ after football chant

A family in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, has registered their newborn baby with the name ‘Isisi’. The name is a direct reference to the popular phrase ‘¿Y si sí?’ (And what if yes?), which was widely adopted by Mexican football fans during the 2026 World Cup to express hope for the national team.

Omar Masso Quintana, head of the 1st Civil Registry Office in Matamoros, confirmed that this is the first time such a name has been officially recorded in the country. The parents reportedly chose the name because they considered it original. To protect the privacy of the minor and the family, authorities have withheld specific personal details and surnames.

The phrase ‘¿Y si sí?’ gained significant traction during the 2026 World Cup, appearing in stadiums, social media, and chants. The expression had previously gained popularity during the Clausura 2026 tournament in Liga MX, used by Pumas UNAM coach Efraín Juárez to motivate his team.
