Matamoros violence leaves six dead following criminal leader arrest

A wave of violence in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, resulted in the deaths of six people following a federal operation to detain a high-priority criminal target. The arrest triggered retaliatory actions by the Gulf Cartel, which involved burning over 70 vehicles to create road blockades across at least eight municipalities.

Five of the fatalities occurred in traffic accidents when vehicles struck burning cars used in the blockades. Among the victims was Priscila González López, who died alongside her parents, Graciela López Silva and Miguel Chávez Ruelas, and her aunt, Marisol López Silva. Their Kia collided with a burned bus near Ejido Soliseño. The couple's two-year-old son, Liam, survived the crash with serious injuries and was transferred to Monterrey for medical treatment.

The sixth victim was a seven-year-old girl who died from a gunshot wound. Authorities are investigating whether the shot originated from a State Guard helicopter involved in the emergency response. Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya stated that investigations will be conducted strictly according to the law to determine responsibility and ensure there is no cover-up.
