Matanzas experiences landslides and flooding due to heavy rain
Heavy rainfall in the Matanzas province of Cuba has caused significant infrastructure damage and flooding. In central Matanzas, a landslide on Buena Vista Street destroyed sidewalks and portions of the pavement between René Fraga Park and the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology. Municipal Intendant Michel León Rodríguez stated that the intense water pressure fractured the hydraulic infrastructure designed to evacuate rainwater.
In the municipality of Cárdenas, the Guásimas stream overflowed following torrential rains, inundating several homes in the Guásimas neighborhood. Residents reported water levels reaching up to one meter inside some residences. Local reports attribute the severity of the flooding to a lack of maintenance in sewer and drainage systems, as well as debris and trash blocking natural water paths.
These incidents follow a pattern of weather-related damage in the region, including previous flooding of the San Juan and Yumurí rivers and structural collapses caused by heavy rains in September.
