Matanzas increases surveillance for dengue and respiratory viruses

Health authorities in Matanzas, Cuba, have increased epidemiological surveillance due to the seasonal risk of arboviruses, such as dengue, and an expected rise in respiratory infections. While current dengue levels are reported to be similar to 2023 and not considered alarming, officials are maintaining high vigilance.

Dr. Andrés Lamas Acevedo, director of the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology, noted that while cases often begin appearing as early as July, transmission typically peaks in September and October. Vector control measures are being implemented, including fumigation in Matanzas and Cárdenas using 25 specialized sprayers.

Authorities are urging the public to assist in prevention by cleaning residential areas and eliminating standing water in tanks and patios, where the Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds. Officials also emphasized the importance of neighborhood sanitation and the eradication of waste to mitigate risks.
