Matanzas swimmers hold Bay Crossing event to honor Fidel Castro
Open water swimmers gathered in Matanzas, Cuba, for the annual Bay Crossing event. This year's competition held special significance as a tribute to the centenary of the birth of Fidel Castro.
Héctor Calatayud Santana and Sahily Echemendía Agüero were the first athletes to complete the course in the male and female categories, respectively. Calatayud Santana, a 48-year-old veteran competitor, noted that despite difficult currents, the event served as a vital opportunity for camaraderie among swimmers despite the country's current complexities.
