Mataripe Refinery marks 76 years as Brazil's second-largest refining unit

The Mataripe Refinery in Bahia, Brazil, is celebrating its 76th anniversary as the second-largest refining unit in the country by average volume. Managed by Acelen since December 2021, the facility processed an average of 262,100 barrels of oil per day in 2025, trailing only the Replan refinery in São Paulo.

According to data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), the refinery processed 95.1 million barrels in 2025, marking its highest annual volume since Acelen assumed management. The plant has an installed capacity of 302,000 barrels per day.

Acelen has invested over R$ 4 billion in modernization and operational efficiency. These investments aim to increase production, improve energy security, and reduce emissions. The refinery is a critical economic driver, accounting for 14% of Brazil's total refining capacity, 42% of the Northeast region's capacity, and 80% of Bahia's capacity. It also contributes 10% to the GDP of Bahia and 16% of the state's ICMS tax revenue.
