Matca farmer distributes free cucumbers due to price collapse
Diego Dragomir, a farmer in the Matca commune of Galați County, has begun distributing cucumbers for free to the public after market prices collapsed. The decision follows a sharp decline in the price offered by intermediaries, which has dropped to between 30 and 40 bani per kilogram.
Dragomir stated that the cost of harvesting alone—including labor and materials—reaches approximately 50 bani per kilogram, making traditional commercial distribution a financial loss. To manage the situation, he is offering one bag of cucumbers per family to those who visit his farm.
The producer expressed hope that market prices might recover to at least 2 lei per kilogram by October, a level he says is necessary to amortize investments and generate profit. Meanwhile, some producers in the region continue to export large quantities of cucumbers to Poland for use in cosmetics and pickling industries.
