Mate Rimac's Bugatti Chiron stolen and recovered in Austria
A Bugatti Chiron valued at approximately three million euros, owned by Rimac Group CEO Mate Rimac, was stolen from the company campus near Zagreb, Croatia, on Wednesday, October 28. The theft occurred because the vehicle keys were left inside the car, a practice Rimac noted is common at the unfenced campus to facilitate easy movement by employees.
The suspect, a 36-year-old Croatian national, allegedly entered the premises under the guise of seeking employment before driving the hypercar toward Slovenia and into Austria. A multi-national police operation involving authorities from Croatia, Slovenia, and Austria tracked the vehicle using its built-in telemetry system, which provided real-time data on location, speed, and fuel levels.
Austrian police intercepted the vehicle at a petrol station on the A9 motorway near Seiersberg, close to Graz. The suspect was arrested at the scene and has reportedly confessed to the theft. While the car sustained minor damage to the front bumper, Rimac stated he does not intend to file criminal charges against the individual, though he noted that security practices at the campus will change.
