Mater Natura begins extinction risk assessment for 4,000 species in São Paulo

Mater Natura has launched a project to evaluate the extinction risk of 4,000 wildlife species in the state of São Paulo. Conducted in partnership with the Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics (SEMIL) and FUNDEPAG, the initiative aims to provide the scientific basis necessary to revise the state’s official List of Threatened Fauna.

The project, which began in May 2026 and is scheduled to continue until March 2028, involves researchers from various taxonomic groups. Evaluations will be conducted progressively in groups of 500 species, covering mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, freshwater and marine fish, insects, and other invertebrates. To date, the project has already completed a work plan and established a database of species with potential occurrence in the region.
