Siracusa council postpones water‑crisis discussion to mid‑August

Opposition groups in Siracusa's municipal council demanded an urgent meeting on the city’s severe water emergency after fourteen councillors submitted a request on 12 July. They argued that the council should have addressed the crisis immediately, when thousands of families were without water and water pressure fell to as low as 47 % in the evenings.

The council president, Alessandro Di Mauro, initially scheduled the special session for the period 10‑16 August, citing procedural rules. Opposition members, including Fratelli d’Italia councillor Paolo Cavallaro, described the delay as a “grave institutional error” and warned that the postponement left residents without timely relief.

Under pressure, the council reconvened on 4 August, allowing the mayor, Francesco Italia, to be heard and acknowledging the urgency. Data from the Comitato Ortigia Cittadinanza Resistente showed irregular water supply affecting up to 47 % of households in the evening, highlighting the critical need for prompt action.
