Maternal mental health linked to child emotional development

Recent research highlights the connection between maternal mental health and child emotional development. An international study led by the University of Seville and the Institute of Biomedicine of Seville found that maternal post-traumatic stress symptoms related to the COVID-19 pandemic are associated with increased negative affectivity in children. This manifests as higher tendencies toward irritability, fear, frustration, and difficulties in emotional regulation.

Separately, a study from Binghamton University tracked children and mothers to examine how attention to facial expressions relates to depressive symptoms. In children whose mothers had a history of major depression, increased symptoms were linked to heightened attention to sad faces. In children without such maternal history, symptoms were associated with decreased attention to happy faces. While these patterns do not prove causation, researchers suggest they may serve as early indicators of vulnerability to childhood depression.
