Maternal mortality concerns rise in Ghana and Nigeria

Advocates and government officials in Ghana and Nigeria are calling for urgent action to address rising maternal mortality rates.

In Ghana, media personality MzGee has issued a public plea to the Presidency and the Ministry of Health to prioritize maternal health. Her call follows high-profile incidents, including the death of Theresa Boakye Dua at Greater Accra Regional Hospital, which her husband alleged was caused by medical negligence. MzGee, convener of the Convergence of Mothers event, is demanding greater accountability and transparency regarding maternal deaths in Ghanaian hospitals.

In Nigeria, the Lagos State Government is emphasizing the need for grassroots awareness and improved access to quality healthcare to prevent maternal deaths. Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, highlighted that many deaths are linked to unsafe termination of pregnancy practices and the use of unqualified providers. Officials are urging community and religious leaders to help reduce the stigma that prevents women and girls from seeking early medical assistance and counseling.
