Maternal mortality in Kenya highlighted by death of mother in Kilifi County
The death of 29-year-old Penina Zawadi highlights the critical state of maternal healthcare in Kenya’s Kilifi County. Following a cesarean section at Malindi Hospital, Zawadi experienced severe hemorrhaging. Despite being transferred to Kilifi County Referral Hospital for emergency surgery to remove her uterus, she died in intensive care on June 23.
Zawadi’s case reflects broader systemic issues in sub-Saharan Africa, a region that accounts for 70% of global maternal deaths, with approximately 180,000 pregnancy-related deaths occurring annually across the continent. In Kilifi County, maternal mortality rates are significantly higher than the Kenyan national average, recording 532 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2022 compared to a national average of 355.
Reproductive rights organizations attribute these deaths to severe bleeding, obstructed labor, preeclampsia, and infections from unsafe abortions. Contributing factors include shortages of basic medical equipment, inadequate transport to higher-level facilities, and limited access to maternal health information.
